Individualized Labor Support for Hospital Births (Monitrice/ Birth Doula )

What is a Doula?

The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.

Studies have shown that when doula’s attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily. (from DONA international)

Research shows that women supported by a doula during labor have been shown to have:

50% reduction of cesarean rate

25% shorter labor

60% reduction in epidural requests

30% reduction in analgesia use

40% reduction in forceps delivery

“If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.” John H. Kennell, MD

What is a Monitrice ?

A Monitrice is similar to a  doula, but there are some added benefits for you. Monitrice are usually trained Midwives who have chosen to be available to women planning hospital births to support natural, safe and satisfying hospital birth experiences.

As your Monitrice,  Adriann can monitor you and your baby’s well being for you at home before going to the hospital.  Adriann is able to listen to fetal heart tones, check your dilation, take your blood pressure and other vital signs, giving you the additional information to help you decide when to go into the hospital.  When you’ve determined the time is right,  Adriann will accompany you to the hospital.  There she will  support you in achieving the birth that you have outlined in your birth plan, and assist you in establishing breastfeeding.

This enables you and your partner to be able to stay home during early labor without needing to endure multiple mad dashes to the hospital only to be told by the hospital staff to come back later.  This is especially helpful for moms planning a VBAC  (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) and women having their first baby who are planning a natural birth.

With her additional training as a midwife, Adriann is happy to offer her services as a Monitrice women planning for a hospital birth.
